Elijah Melendez is emerging as the new face of Auburn football's defense, and Xavier Atkins' dismissal could make his leadership even more important as the Tigers prepare to face LSU. After Auburn's historic upset of No. 1 Georgia, Alex Golesh and defensive coordinator DJ Durkin have plenty of reasons to feel confident about the future of their defense. But Auburn's recent social media activity may have revealed something even bigger about Melendez's growing role within the program. On today's Auburn HIT, we examine how Melendez has become one of Auburn's most important defensive players and why his leadership could define the Tigers' next chapter. A recent War Eagle Plus locker room video prominently featured Melendez addressing his teammates following the Georgia victory. For a sophomore, that kind of leadership stands out. Melendez has already established himself on the field with physical tackling, impressive run defense, an interception against Gunner Stockton and a crucial late-game pass breakup against Georgia. Now he's emerging as a vocal leader inside Auburn's locker room. With Atkins no longer on the roster, Auburn needs other defenders to take on greater responsibilities. Bryce Deas is one of those players. His ability to defend the run, cover tight ends and running backs, and execute his assignments will be critical against Lane Kiffin's LSU offense. Jared Smith is another name to watch. Auburn needs Smith to become a more consistent pass-rushing threat, especially following Atkins' departure. Smith showed encouraging flashes against Georgia, but can he deliver his best performance against LSU? We discuss why Melendez, Deas and Smith could determine whether Auburn's defense builds on its Georgia performance and pulls off another SEC upset.
